Running through Australia

Blog '' Running ''

On the 15th of October I will start my new trip which is an attempt to cross Australia. I will start to run in Melbourne. The destination is Darwin. It is a 5000 kms journey through middle of Australia, which I named '' Running through Australia ''.

As well as sport challenge which is more than 120 marathons I would like to meet and witness a few Aboriginal communities. I would like to make a documentary about their society, knowledge, culture, sacred sites, Uluru-Kata-Tjuta Nationalpark, Corroboré,...

The motivation behind my journey is to raise money for the fundation Syndrome of Lowe, this charity has been set up to assist children who have a rare diseases that causes physical and mental handicaps and medical problems.

I plan to cross Australia on foot with no assistance, with only my backpack, a little trailer, a camera and a video camera.

Ready? I will be happy to share my trip with you!

On the 31st of December, I ran to Kata Tjuta, a ranger told me to sleep at the sunset viewing point. Regarding to the National Park, I was not allowed. But he said he was really concern about my safety. I had the most magnificient New year eve in my life, and I can say : I was the only one in the world sleeping for the 31st of December in Kata Tjuta. The next day, I left for the 182 kilometre's dirt road which separed KatKaltukatjara Docker River from Kata Tjuta. I spent 10 marvelous days wit...

I was a few kilometres from the turn off between the Stuart and Lasseter Highway. I made it to Urldunda, the roadhouse is located right at the intersection of this 2 highways. I slept there one night, I was exiting, Uluru Kata Tjuta was only 280 kilometres away from me, nothing to compare with my entire journey of 5300 kilometres. I couldn’t wait to see, visit, witness this 2 Aboriginal communities. I wanted to be in Yulara for Christmas. I had the worse temperatures ever, up to 49 degr...

Adelaide to the Border

Posted by Remi CAMUS on February 3, 2012 at 1:20 AM Comments comments (0)

I left Adelaide on the 16th of November, heading north to Port Augusta. I could stare at the beauty of Flinders Ranges, the vegetation started to change a bit too, trees were getting smaller and the Red sand could be seen. I had the chance to meet nice people, sharing their time, giving me a bit of their hospitality.

I got my first and hope my last fine. I made a bush fire in a place call Snowtown, I thought I put down the fire, unfortunately no. The police car stopped me after 60 km&#...

on the way to Adelaide

Posted by Remi CAMUS on February 3, 2012 at 1:15 AM Comments comments (0)

I had only a few hundred kilometres before to get to Adelaide; I was still close to the ocean. Nothing happen, I mean I was in a good shape, didn’t really expect that, training in France was nothing to compare to my day to day life through my run. But in Beachport I had my first injury, a shin splint. I thought, at the beginning, of a bite from a Red Back. Effectively, I slept in a caravan after meeting Bill. He told me he owns 2 caravans on the first left turn off. Thought it might be ...

Early morning. Graham and I are awake, drinking our coffee. He is asking me if I saw the Blue Lake when I came yesterday. I say ''No, didn't have the time.'' ''Jump in my car'' he says. “You have to see that”. The lake is really nice.

Day 14

28th of October.

Once you get out of Victoria and move to South Australia, you have to take off half an hour, so I take my time. It starts to be windy and then it starts to rain. I'm pissed off. I need to take care of myself while running, the truck drivers don't respect anything. I finally arrive in Mont Gambier around 3. Perfect! I have the time for a good shopping in Woolworth. After ...

Day 13

27th of October.

I'm waiting for Pierre's call from ABC radio. When he calls, we chat for 15 minutes. I hug Glenys, the farm owner and go. I start to run and after a while I feel hungry. So I stop for a quick snack. I feed myself and ants as well. I love these animals. They are clever, loyal, social. I keep going. On the way I find a brown snake. It's one of the worst snakes in Australia....

26th of October.

When I get up around 7, there is no one in the kitchen. I warm up my feet in the front of the chimney. Then Christine gets up and we take our breakfast together. I leave around 10 with full stomach and rested legs. Full of energy. I make my move on the way to Portland and turn right to Nelson. I decide to avoid the highway, trucks go fast and don't respect me. It gets late. I d...

Day 11

25th of October.

I leave Port Fairy. I can see a wind farm from the distance. Clean energy. For me it is on the best things that a human being has made. I wonder why they didn't paint it in green and the rotor in yellow. It would be much better! I run and look at the road so I feel that I go faster. A highway police patrol pulls over. The cops talk to me and they wish me good luck. I am...

23rd of October.

I still feel really weird. But I need to get to Warrnambool, which is 42 ams from where I am. I want to find a campsite for a nice warm shower. The road is pretty flat, but I'm scared that I won't make it. Each kilometer goes slowly. 10 kms from Warrnambool, ...

22nd of October.

I didn't sleep enough. I'm ready to leave around 7.30. There is one hill to climb and then the area is flat, perfect. Unfortunately I don't feel well. I'm cold-warm, and vomiting. I decide to stop for today, find a spot close to the road and crawl inside of ...

Day 7

Posted by Remi CAMUS on November 10, 2011 at 4:05 PM Comments comments (1)

21st of October. It was raining at night. A rainy night is not the best thing that happens to a traveler. Today the biggest part of the road is flat and goes down a bit, nothing comparable to yesterday. When it rains that brings back to life all the birds, they sing. I try to imitate them. 30 kms later I start to be on my reserve of food. Where are the 12 Apostles? Finally I can see the sign telling me it is 2 kms left. When I get there it's like a victory, people applaud, encouraging m...

Day 6

20th of October. I spent a weird night in the garden. The wind was blowing through trees, a koala was calling its baby, I also heard a bear scream. I get up, eat my breakfast, looking at the sunrise. Today it's cloudy so i'm taking my time. All day long the way goes up and down. I even think that I walk more than run with my trailer in between the hills. I try to record my journey and make sound tapes. I try to get exotic birds, but it's not easy. It starts to be late and I'm still in Otway...
